For the last* time, ISLAM IS NOT A RACE! I’m going to dumb this down as much as possible, without resorting to the use of Crayons.
Religions are beliefs that people choose to accept. A race is (if anything) a set of genetic similarities shared by groups of people. People are born with those features, so it’s not really fair to judge them. On the other hand, judging a group of people for choosing to believe that murder is a justifiable punishment for mocking their religion is perfectly reasonable, and most certainly is not racist.
23% (1.57 billion people) of the planet is Muslim. 57 countries contain a Muslim majority. 62% of the Muslim population lives in Asia. Approximately 7 million Muslims live in the United States. There are Muslims everywhere, and they sure as Hell didn’t all come from Arab countries. The Muslim population is as diverse, racially, as that of Christianity.
There are clusters of Muslim extremists operating just about everywhere Muslims exist. What they have in common, rather than race, is a set of beliefs that are considered abhorrent to the majority of other people, including other Muslims. Expression of that abhorrence cannot be reasonably construed as racist, anymore than it would be if we were vilifying the beliefs of the KKK, which are, in many ways, the Christian equivalent.
So, can we please stop with this nonsense about Charlie Hebdo’s cartoons being racist, and start focusing on what really matters here, which is that religious extremists are running amok and murdering journalists, and that we need to figure out how to put a stop to that before an all-out religious war threatens the lives of the rest of us?
*Not really. People will keep getting this wrong forever.
